The Honorable Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D.

Leadership Council

Jane Lubchenco is a Distinguished University Professor and Advisor in Marine Studies at Oregon State University. She is also the first U.S. Science Envoy for the Ocean. Dr. Lubchenco served as Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) from 2009 to 2013. Prior to her appointment, Dr. Lubchenco was on the faculty at Oregon State University from 1977 to 2009 and at Harvard University from 1975 to 1977. She has served as President for the American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS), the International Council for Science, and the Ecological Society of America, and was a board member for ten years on the National Science Board. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society and the Royal Society. Dr. Lubchenco has served on several commissions, including the Aspen Institute Arctic Commission and the Council of Advisors for Google Ocean. She received her bachelor's degree in biology from Colorado College, her master's in zoology from the University of Washington, and her doctorate in ecology from Harvard University. Dr. Lubchenco was a commissioner on the Pew Oceans Commission.
