The Honorable Leon Panetta
Leon Panetta is a co-founder of the Panetta Institute for Public Policy at California State University at Monterey Bay. Prior to returning the Panetta Institute in February 2013, he served under President Barack Obama as the Secretary of Defense from 2011 to 2013 and as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA ) from 2009 to 2011. He co-founded the Panetta Institute for Public Policy in 1997. Secretary Panetta served as President Bill Clinton's Chief of Staff from 1994 to 1997 and was the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) from 1993 to 1994. He represented the California's 16th District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 1993 and was Chairman of the House Committee on the Budget. Prior to his political career he practiced law at Panetta, Thompson, and Panetta from 1971 to 1976 and was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army. Secretary Panetta has served on numerous boards and commissions. He served as Chair of the Pew Oceans Commission and then as Co-Chair of the Joint Ocean Commission Initiative from 2005 to 2010. He also co-chaired California Forward and Governor Schwarzenegger's Council on Base Support and Retention. In 2006, he served on the Iraq Study Group, a bipartisan national commission seeking a new course for the war in Iraq. Secretary Panetta received a bachelor's degree from Santa Clara University and his juris doctor from Santa Clara University Law School.
